Fulham Lodge
Fulham
Who knew that a derelict old keeper’s lodge on the outskirts of a cemetery could be transformed into such a phenomenal piece of modern architecture, spread over three floors and fit with a 43ft swimming pool? Owner Justin Maxwell Stuart had foresight. He took on the hefty project of renovating the 19th-century neo-gothic lodge, which was aired on Grand Designs in January 2021, and after four years of tiresome but impressive works, the place has been converted into a staggeringly attractive space – from abandoned house amid overgrown weeds to a smart and sophisticated London playden – this is the ultimate destination for a quirky break in the city. What’s more, when you book your stay with quality homes marketplace Smarter, it will give a portion of every booking to its sister charity Stay For Good Foundation as part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon footprint.
Walking into the five-bedroom property, you’ll be struck first by the design and how every corner of space has been thoughtfully and thoroughly utilised. The open-plan living area on the ground floor is bright, slick and fun, playing with a blue-and-white colour palette in the walls and furnishings to create a non-clichéd nautical theme, which continues to run throughout the house, from the unique fish figurines to the cushions dotted about. The contemporary kitchen becomes the central hub and provides the perfect dinner party setting, with Great Gatsby-style bar stools and a grand long dining table to seat 10. The large bifold doors open out to a beautifully manicured garden and the two surrounding living areas provide both a room to read the paper with your morning coffee, and a spot to snuggle up in front of the TV in the evenings.
This stunning property offers a plethora of luxurious amenities for an unforgettable stay. One of its standout features is an enchanting spiralling stone staircase leading to an opulent basement. This lower level boasts a spa-like swimming pool and sauna, perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation.
In addition to the pool, guests can also enjoy an impressive chill-out entertainment room equipped with a well-appointed bar. While exploring the basement, be sure to catch a glimpse of the extensive wine cellar, a sight that will surely leave you eagerly anticipating your next glass.
During the day, indulge in pure bliss by floating in the tranquil oasis of the swimming pool. As the evening unfolds, wind down with a refreshing G&T or two. When it's time to retreat, make your way up the spiralling staircase to the master bedroom at the top of the house. Here, you'll find a peaceful sanctuary adorned with countless cushions and a luxuriously plush superking bed, beckoning you to rest and relax.
If you prefer a change of scenery, the property offers four other well-appointed bedrooms, providing ample space for you and your fellow guests. The grandeur continues with the option to unwind in one of the enormous bathtubs, surrounded by an ambiance of your choice. With a sound system featuring speakers throughout the rooms, you can immerse yourself in your favorite tunes, effortlessly setting the mood for an evening of ultimate comfort.
Embark on a bubble bath extravaganza, lose yourself to the rhythm of the music, and create the perfect ambiance by adjusting the lighting to your liking. This exceptional Airbnb promises an experience beyond compare, allowing you to revel in luxury and escape the everyday.
The transformation of this lodge was truly remarkable, resulting in a captivating blend of tradition and innovation (and did we mention the enchanting moat in the garden?). While the exterior still exudes the timeless elegance of a gothic structure nestled within a cemetery, stepping through the door will transport you into a world of modern creativity and design, leaving you utterly mesmerized. Weaving together historical charm and contemporary flair, this unique abode promises an exhilarating getaway.

Cockspur Street
Trafalgar Square
Living on Trafalgar Square may seem like an impossible dream, but believe it or not, there are actual residents in this iconic London landmark. Nestled just off the square, this OneFineStay apartment, formerly known as Norway House, provides a unique and cozy vantage point to experience the heart of London. Situated on the fifth floor, right opposite Canada House, you'll have a front-row seat to the bustling city while enjoying a comfortable retreat.
While staying at this apartment, you can indulge in the refined delights of Fortnum & Mason, London's renowned luxury department store, for all your gastronomic needs. Start your day with a pleasant stroll past Buckingham Palace and through St James's Park, where you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the park's resident pelicans. And if you're an art enthusiast, the National Gallery is just a stone's throw away, offering a chance to immerse yourself in masterpieces, including iconic works by Monet.
The apartment has two spacious bedrooms, cooled by ceiling fans and set off a Georgian-blue-and-white hallway that feels like it belongs to a larger house, with two bathrooms on the other side, lined with swirling marble. At the far end is a small but well-equipped kitchen, and a clubby sitting room with beams from the original building and lined with reclaimed wooden panels. It’s a little like sitting inside a walnut, or a Jeeves and Wooster-era bachelor pad, with a vintage Harrow XI cricket bat in one corner, a deer-antler lamp in another, and a herringbone-print sofa and pneumatic armchairs to sprawl decadently in before mixing an afternoon Old Fashioned on the Calligaris teak dining table. A few clues to the owners, perhaps, in the Japanese flower art on the bedroom walls, and eclectic bookshelves that take in ceramics, Sarah Perry, British folk traditions and Norwegian geography. Easy enough to dawdle here for a day but just outside the windows is all the thrill – even for staycationing Londoners like ourselves – of the city beat. Weekend mornings here can be quieter than some backwater suburbs; the clop of horses heading to Hyde Park, the Post Office Tower greeting us with ‘Good Morning London’ on its digital display.
Our adventure began with a Treasure Trail map, which served as a guide to secret spots around the famous Trafalgar Square. We ventured through back roads, discovering unknown markers and footprints of the past, such as a unique pub near Charing Cross and the Trafalgar Way's layout at Canada House. The building hides a piece of less-known history, as evidenced by a statue of St Olav with his sword poised, located above the entrance. This served as the governing seat for the Norwegian government-in-exile, with frequent visits from King Haakon VII, during the occupation in the wartime era. If the King had happened to visit during our stay, we would have gladly taken him for some drinks at the pavement-side Sofitel St James nearby or Da Henrietta's bar in Covent Garden, with the help of OneFineStay's concierge team. This particular area of the city manages to retain a touch of personality and coziness, contrasting the otherwise austere and unwelcoming vibe of the surroundings. Rick Jordan

A smart, super-central maisonette
Marylebone
Minutes away from Mayfair, Bond Street and Regent’s Park and on the corner of villagey Marylebone High Street, this two-storey 18th-century townhouse could hardly be more central – although we couldn’t possibly tell while inside its quiet sanctuary. Filled with moody, muted art and vintage furniture pieces, the subway-tiled kitchen and bathroom are simple but cool and retro, while the spacious bedrooms are tucked snugly downstairs on the lower-ground floor, and the grand, high-ceilinged living-dining area is centred around an unforgettable, eye-catching marble fireplace. There’s even a tree right outside the imposing front door that manages to blossom in the heart of winter. It's one of hundreds of London homes that you can stay in via OneFineStay, and a booking here also includes a welcome and tour from a concierge, a hamper filled with goodies such as special batch coffee, English sparkling wine, tea and shortbread, and, if you want them, more tailored experiences such as cookery classes or a nanny service.
